Producer Information
Castello del Poggio is a large wine estate located in Asti, Piedmont. It makes a range of the region’s key wine styles, including Moscato d’Asti and Barbera d’Asti, and a range of grape varieties including Brachetto, Grignolino and Dolcetto. The estate has been owned by the Zonin family (and eponymous wine group) of the Veneto since 1985, and is named after the original castle in the village of Poggio. The vineyard covers around 160 hectares (395 acres) and is situated in a sunny, natural amphitheatre with deep clay and gravel soils some 10km (six miles) north of the town of Asti. The vines are on average 25 years old, and yields are controlled by green harvesting. In the vineyard, Castello del Poggio uses a range of oak regimes, from French oak barriques to the more traditional large Slavonian oak casks. Castello del Poggio’s flagship wine is its Barbera d’Asti, of which it makes both a standard version and a cru (single-vineayrd) wine called Masaréj. On top of this, there is a range of varietal wines made under the Provincia di Pavia IGT, and several sparkling wines made from Moscato and Brachetto.
